Scuba gear picks
Every roundup on this site presents picks at three tiers rather than as one flat list, because that is how divers actually shop: the $225 first computer, the $580 buy-once unit, the $1,295 technical one. Each page names who the expert tier is wrong for, which is the half that makes the rest credible.
Gear is researched against published manufacturer specifications, published training agency standards and verified owner reviews across retailers. We do not test in person and we do not pretend to. Where a figure could not be confirmed against the maker's own documentation, it is left out rather than guessed at.

A computer is the one piece of gear every recreational agency tells a diver to own personally rather than rent, it is the largest single line in every build on this site, and it is bought roughly once a decade. Everything else is easier to get right and cheaper to get wrong.

How do the three tiers work?

Those are not three quality grades. They are three different answers to different diving. A diver doing three warm water trips a year is correctly served by the beginner tier, and the expert tier would give them a stiffer fin they cannot use and a computer whose best features they will never reach. The complete setups put each tier together as a whole kit with a running total.
Why do some picks link to a search rather than a product page?
Because a great deal of serious dive gear is dealer-only by design. Regulators, BCDs and most technical computers are sold through dive centres specifically so that the buyer gets a fit check and an annual service relationship, and several of the best options in the niche are simply not sold on a marketplace. Those entries carry a scoped search link rather than a fabricated product listing. That is the correct outcome in this niche, not a gap.
What we will not do
We will not claim to have tested gear we have not used, we will not invent a product listing to make a card look complete, and we will not imply that any piece of equipment substitutes for training. A dive computer does not make a diver safe. A course does. Nothing in any roundup here extends the limits of your certification, and the safety disclaimer sets that out in full.
Which categories are worth spending on, and which are not?
Dive gear does not reward money evenly. Some categories change the diving substantially as you move up, and others hit a ceiling almost immediately. Ranked by how much the top of the category improves on the bottom:

Read that table alongside the builds. The beginner setup spends where the top two rows sit and buys the cheapest defensible option everywhere else, and the expert setup is explicit that two of its most expensive lines are actively wrong for the wrong diver.
What actually separates a good pick from a bad one?
Four things, in roughly this order of importance, and none of them appears at the top of a specification sheet.
- Fit and legibility. A mask that does not seal your face is worthless at any price, and a computer you cannot read at arm's length in dim light will be replaced within two years. Presbyopia arrives for most divers in their forties and is the most common unstated reason a computer gets sold on.
- A real service and parts path. A regulator is a lifetime relationship with a shop, not a purchase. A brand with no local dealer means shipping your first stage away every year, and a discontinued model means a parts hunt in five years.
- Behaviour at the margins. Balanced first stages breathe the same at 500 psi as at 3,000. Sealed ones keep silt and freezing water out. Those differences are invisible on an easy dive and decisive on a hard one.
- Whether it matches your diving rather than your ambition. The most common expensive mistake in this hobby is a warm water holiday diver buying cold water technical equipment, and the second is a diver in 55 F water trying to make a 3 mm suit work.
