Buy it if you want the clearest screen and the most trusted decompression implementation in recreational diving. Skip it if you want air integration or a watch you can wear to work, because the Peregrine does neither and Shearwater sell the Teric for exactly those reasons.

What it does well
- The screen is the reason people buy Shearwater. A large, bright colour display that stays readable in green water and at depth removes an entire category of underwater guesswork.
- Two buttons with a context-aware menu is far easier to operate in gloves than a four-button computer with modal menus.
- Rechargeable with a wireless station means no battery hatch, which means one fewer O-ring seal that can be flooded by a bad service or a trapped hair.
- Shearwater's decompression implementation is the one technical divers trust, and a recreational diver inherits that pedigree and the ability to adjust conservatism deliberately.
- Thirty hours of runtime covers a full liveaboard week without a charger going anywhere near salt water.
Where it falls short
- There is no air integration. It will not show you tank pressure and it will not calculate gas time remaining, so you still carry a submersible pressure gauge and you still check it.
- It is a large puck, not a watch. It goes on for the dive and comes off afterwards, unlike the Teric which is wearable daily.
- A dive computer models tissue loading with an algorithm. It does not measure nitrogen in your body, and no computer can tell you that a given profile is safe for you on a given day.
- Conservatism settings matter and the defaults are a starting point, not a personal prescription. Changing them without understanding what gradient factors do is a way to make a computer less safe while feeling more informed.
- Rechargeable means you are responsible for charging it. A computer with a flat battery on the boat is a dive missed, where a user-replaceable battery can be carried as a spare.

Does the Shearwater Peregrine have air integration?
No. It does not receive a transmitter signal and it does not display tank pressure or gas time remaining. You dive it alongside a submersible pressure gauge, which is how most recreational diving has always worked. If air integration is a requirement, Shearwater's Teric and Perdix families are where to look.
Peregrine or Teric?
The Peregrine has the larger screen and the lower price; the Teric is watch-sized, wearable daily and offers air integration. The decompression capability that matters to a recreational diver is comparable. It is a form factor and integration decision. We compare them directly.
Is a rechargeable dive computer a problem?
It is a habit change rather than a problem. There is no battery hatch to flood, which removes a real failure mode, and about 30 hours per charge covers a full week of diving. The trade is that you cannot fix a flat battery on a boat, so charge it the night before and take the charger on trips.
Should I change the conservatism settings?
Not without understanding what you are changing. Gradient factors alter how close the computer lets you approach the theoretical limits, and moving them in the wrong direction makes the computer less conservative while presenting the same confident display. Learn what they do, or leave the defaults alone and dive well within them.
Can two divers share one computer?
No. A dive computer tracks the tissue loading of the person wearing it based on the profile it recorded. Passing it between divers gives both of them wrong information, and a diver following a buddy's computer is diving a profile the computer never saw. Every diver carries their own.
