Complete scuba setups
Three complete dive kits, built line by line, with a real running total on each. Every item is linked, nothing is assumed and nothing is missing: buy a list and you can turn up to a dive. They are genuinely different builds rather than the same list at three prices.
A complete recreational scuba kit runs from about $1,768 for a first setup that leaves nothing out, to about $3,070 for a buy-once kit, to about $7,630 for the performance ceiling with redundancy and a cylinder. The dive computer is the single largest decision in all three, which is why it leads every build.
What does each build cost, and what do you get?

Read the table by the last column first. Water temperature decides more of a dive kit than budget does: the exposure suit, the regulator's cold water rating, the amount of lead you carry and even the fins all follow from it. A diver doing three tropical trips a year is genuinely better served by the beginner build than by the expert one, and that is not a compromise, it is the correct kit for that diving.

How should you decide which build to start from?
Three questions settle it, in this order.
- How cold is your water? Below about 66 F, start from the intermediate build regardless of dive count, because the exposure suit and the sealed regulator stop being upgrades and start being requirements. Run the number through the wetsuit thickness calculator.
- How often do you dive? Under about ten dives a year, own the fit items and the computer and keep renting the rest. Rental fees only outrun ownership somewhere around twenty five to forty dives a year, depending on local prices.
- Do you plan your own dives? A diver who follows a guide needs no compass, no slate and arguably no light. A diver planning a shore dive needs all three, and that change alone is most of the difference between the first two builds.
What should you never buy before the training?
Gear does not extend the limits of a certification, and several items sold to recreational divers assume a course that most buyers have not taken. A drysuit, a rebreather, stage cylinders and any planned decompression capability all fall here. What does a dive kit cost to run each year?
Ownership has a tail. A regulator needs an annual service at $80 to $150, a BCD inspection runs $40 to $80, a computer battery is $0 to $40 depending on whether it is a user item, and a cylinder needs a visual inspection annually and a hydrostatic test every five years in the United States. Budget $150 to $250 a year for the beginner build and $250 to $400 for the expert one. At what point does owning gear beat renting it?
This is the question underneath all three builds, and it has an arithmetic answer rather than a philosophical one. Rental costs vary, but a full set of rental gear typically runs $40 to $70 a day at a shop, and individual items run $10 to $20 each. Set that against the purchase price plus the annual service cost and the crossover falls out.

Two of those rows deserve a caveat rather than a crossover. The fit items should be bought on day one regardless of the arithmetic, because a rental mask that does not seal your face ruins more dives than any equipment failure. The cylinder looks like a reasonable purchase on the numbers and usually is not: it needs a visual inspection annually and a hydrostatic test every five years in the United States, weighs about 31 pounds empty, and is awkward and expensive to fly with.
If you can only buy three things, what should they be?
- Mask, snorkel, fins and boots, treated as one purchase of about $240. A mask is fitted to your face, a fin pocket is fitted over your boot, and a rental counter can match neither. This is also the cheapest group on the page.
- A dive computer, from about $299. It is the one item every recreational agency tells a diver to own personally rather than rent, because it tracks your own exposure across your own dives, and because diving a different rented unit every trip is exactly the wrong way to build familiarity with the instrument you depend on.
