Expert Scuba Setup: The Performance Ceiling
A complete expert scuba setup costs about $7,630 and is built around a high flow balanced piston regulator at around $1,249, a Shearwater Perdix 3 at $1,295 with a $445 transmitter, and a Scubapro Hydros Pro BCD at around $917. It carries a second computer, two lights and two cutting tools for redundancy. Most divers should not buy it: under about a hundred dives, the intermediate build is the better kit.
This is the performance ceiling for recreational diving, built for a diver who dives most weekends, dives cold, dives long, and has already found the limits of a mid range kit. It is redundant where redundancy is cheap and it does not compromise where a compromise costs a dive. It is also, for the great majority of divers reading it, the wrong kit to buy, and the section below says so plainly before the list rather than after it.
Who should not buy this build?
Credibility on a page like this comes from talking people out of it, so this section is first. Do not buy this kit if any of the following is true:
- You have fewer than about a hundred dives. Most of the money here buys margin at the edges of performance, and a diver still building fundamentals will not touch those edges. The intermediate build is a better kit for that diver at less than half the price.
- You dive warm water on holiday. A high flow balanced piston first stage and a graphene lined 5 mm are solving cold, deep and long, and a Caribbean reef at 60 feet is none of those.
- You do not already frog kick. The Apeks RK3 HD is a short stiff blade built for frog and back kicking. For a diver who flutters, it is slower, more tiring and worse than the cheaper fin in the intermediate build. This is the clearest case on the page of an expensive item that is actively wrong for the wrong diver.
- You want it to unlock deeper or longer dives. It does not. Depth and decompression limits come from training and from your certification, and no item on this page changes either.

Two computers, not one. The reason is not redundancy of the algorithm, it is that a failed primary at depth should end one dive rather than a trip, and a backup running the same profile means you still have a record and a no-stop time.

Why is redundancy the organising idea of this build?
Because at this level of diving the question stops being what performs best and becomes what happens when something stops working, an hour from shore, in cold water, with a boat that leaves on schedule.
The redundancy here is deliberately cheap. A second computer costs about 17 percent of the primary. A second cutting tool costs about 14 percent of the first. A backup light costs less than half the primary. A spare mask costs a rounding error against the rest of the page. In each case the marginal cost of carrying a second one is small and the marginal cost of not having it is a lost dive or worse.
Note what is deliberately not redundant: the regulator and the BCD. A single first stage with a properly specified octopus is the recreational standard, and true gas redundancy means an independent supply, which belongs to technical training rather than to a shopping list. What does the regulator actually buy at this price?
The Scubapro MK25 EVO with an S620 Ti is a balanced piston first stage with very high flow, paired with a titanium second. Two things are worth separating out of that description.
Flow rate matters when demand is high. Two divers breathing hard from one first stage, at depth, in cold water, is the scenario that separates regulators. Gas is denser at depth, so the same volume of breath is more work to move, and a first stage that cannot keep up makes that worse at precisely the wrong moment. A high flow balanced piston set is the unambiguous answer to that specific problem.
Piston versus diaphragm is a real trade rather than a tier. The piston design here is not sealed in the way the MK17 EVO 2 is, and for genuinely cold or silty water the sealed diaphragm set is the better tool despite being cheaper. An Atomic Z3 deserves a mention as the ownership-cost alternative: a sealed first stage with a seat saving orifice that lets Atomic quote a three year service interval rather than an annual one. Over a decade that is real money.

What is deliberately absent from this build?
A drysuit, a backplate and wing, a canister light, stage cylinders and a rebreather. Each is omitted for the same reason: they belong to a kind of diving that needs a course, and putting them on a list implies otherwise.
A shell drysuit is the nearest of them, and it is genuinely the right purchase for cold water diving. Buy it after the drysuit certification and ideally from the shop running the course, because seal sizing and a proper first dive under supervision are most of what makes a drysuit safe. The three builds are different kits rather than the same kit at three prices. The beginner build minimises total cost to a working setup. The intermediate build is the buy-once kit and is the right answer for most divers who dive regularly. Why does this build have two dive computers?
Because a failed primary at depth should end one dive rather than a trip. A second computer running its own model from the surface keeps a valid no-stop time and a record of the dive if the primary floods, fails to wake, or runs its battery down. It is also the cheapest form of redundancy in diving: a backup unit costs a fraction of the primary and lives on the other wrist without being noticed.
Is a titanium regulator worth it?
The titanium second stage in this build buys weight saving and corrosion resistance rather than a different breathing experience, and the breathing performance comes from the balanced piston first stage rather than the metal. A titanium knife is a clearer case, since stainless genuinely rusts in salt water. Treat titanium as a durability and weight upgrade you can happily skip, not as a performance one.
Does this kit make me ready for technical diving?
No. Technical diving is defined by training and by planned decompression obligation, not by equipment. Several items here appear in technical kits, and the primary computer supports trimix and closed circuit, but owning a capable computer no more qualifies a diver to plan a decompression dive than owning a fast car qualifies someone to race. Technical diving requires a formal course, and this site does not publish technical procedures.
Should I buy a drysuit instead of the wetsuit in this build?
If your water is below about 55 F, or you do repetitive long dives in the high 50s, yes. A drysuit is warmer, tunable for the day, and dry between dives. It is also a second buoyancy device with failure modes a wetsuit does not have, including a stuck inflator and gas migrating to the feet, which is why every agency teaches it as its own certification.
