Why does the dive computer take a quarter of the budget?
Because it is the only item on the list doing continuous safety-relevant arithmetic while you dive, and because it is the one piece of gear every recreational agency tells divers to own personally rather than rent.
A computer tracks your actual depth and time profile second by second and recalculates your remaining no-decompression time from it. A printed table cannot do that: it prices the whole dive at your maximum depth, which is almost never where you spent the dive. On a typical multi level reef dive that difference is worth real minutes of bottom time, and it is worth them safely rather than by cutting a margin.

Why a jacket BCD rather than a back inflate?
A jacket style BCD inflates around your waist and sides, which floats you upright at the surface. A back inflate wing puts all of the lift behind you, which trims flatter underwater and tends to push you face-down at the surface until you learn to lean back into it.
For a diver in their first fifty dives, the surface behaviour matters more than most gear lists admit. That is where you sort out a flooding mask, wait for a boat, and talk to a buddy, often in chop, and a jacket makes all of those easier. What can you skip from this build?
Telling you what not to buy is what makes the rest of the list credible. On a guided warm water dive in good visibility, these come off without changing the safety of the dive:
- A dive light. Genuinely optional in clear daytime water. It becomes mandatory the moment you do a night dive or look inside anything, and a night dive requires two lights rather than one.
- A compass. Skip it while you are diving with a guide. Buy one the first time you plan a shore dive yourself, since navigation is the skill that turns a guided diver into an independent one.
- A wrist slate. Useful, not essential, on a single level guided dive.

What should you keep renting instead of buying?
Cylinders and lead, for as long as you can stand it. A set of soft weights is worth owning because it lets you fine tune trim, but the bulk lead can stay at the shop.
Cylinders are the clearer case. An aluminium 80 costs a little over $200, needs a visual inspection every year and a hydrostatic test every five, weighs about 31 pounds empty, and is awkward and expensive to fly with. What should you upgrade first from here?
In this order, and the order is driven by how much each change alters the diving:
- The computer, if you dive more than a couple of weeks a year. A colour screen and a configurable algorithm are a real difference across a decade of diving.
