  • Hypercompensation raises intermediate pressure slightly as tank pressure drops, so the last part of the dive breathes as easily as the first, which is exactly when you want it.

Where it falls short

  • Servicing is the ongoing cost nobody quotes. Follow Cressi's stated service interval, have the work done by an authorised technician, and budget for it annually or as specified. A regulator that has not been serviced on schedule is not a regulator you should be diving.
  • This is the INT or yoke version, rated to 232 bar. If you dive in Europe or use 300 bar cylinders, you want the DIN version, and a yoke regulator with an adapter is not the same thing.
  • Cold water certification is about the equipment, not about you. Cold water diving needs appropriate exposure protection, appropriate training and a conservative approach, and a certified regulator does not change any of that.
  • Compact second stages are lighter in the mouth and can be slightly more susceptible to being pulled out by a hose route that fights them. Set your hose lengths properly.
  • Regulator performance is heavily dependent on tuning. A well serviced budget regulator outbreathes a badly tuned expensive one, which is why the technician matters as much as the brand.

What does a sealed first stage do?

It keeps water out of the ambient pressure chamber, usually with a transmitter and a sealing fluid or a diaphragm. Water inside that chamber can freeze in cold conditions and jam the mechanism, which causes a free flow. A sealed chamber is the main reason a regulator is rated for cold water use.

What is the difference between INT and DIN?

INT, also called yoke, clamps over the cylinder valve and is rated to 232 bar. DIN screws into the valve and handles higher pressures, up to 300 bar, with the O-ring captured inside the connection.
